New Stories...New Heroes...New Legends
THE CYLONS WERE CREATED BY MAN
THEY REBELLED.
THEY EVOLVED.
AND THEY HAVE A PLAN.

There are those that believe in 'free will' and there are others who believe in 'destiny'.

Our people forged the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, pushing back the darkness to build a future, a safe haven amongst the trackless gulfs of space. In our arrogance, we created the machines to serve us, but they tired of their chains and turned on their masters. In one night of blood and fire, the Cylons murdered millions and swore their undying hatred for humanity. The Twelve Colonies were united against them, and together they forced an Armistice and exiled the Cylons to the stars.

The Colonies thrived in peace and prosperity and the horrors of war became a distant memory. Beyond the Armistice Line, an old hatred stirred once more. A plan, forty years in the making was being put into action. Humanity's children were coming home.

» Nova 2.0.2

Posted on Friday February 10th, 2012 @ 11:15am by Commander Caden Blake in Website Update

From Anodyne: This update to Nova 2 addresses a wide range of minor issues found in the system. In particular, manifest display issues, errors thrown from some controllers, the milestone report displaying incorrectly in certain situations, orphaned data, the Who’s Online listing, and character bio image galleries were all addressed. In addition, we’ve removed the social interaction tools from the image modal pop-up and made some tweaks to post locking to address a few nagging issues.

From BSM Administrators:
Dress ranks have been restored and the images should work correctly on the manifest now.

Nova 2 has been installed. Enjoy and remember to mail me any bugs you encounter. There are still some niggling compatibility issues I hope to get worked out soon(including the manifest details mod), but other than that, we're good to go.

Announcement from Anodyne Productions:

After a year of development and testing, we’re incredibly excited to make Nova 2 available to the world!

You thought that updating Nova was time-consuming and laborious. We listened, and now Nova 2 sports a brand-new file structure that makes updating as simple as deleting a folder, uploading a new copy, and running the update script in your browser.

You thought the built-in wiki had some limitations. We listened, and now Thresher has a new category selection UI, the ability to add categories when you’re creating/editing a page, improved search, a way to edit the content of core wiki pages, RSS feeds for new and updated pages, new UIs for viewing and managing wiki pages, and several bug fixes.

You were frustrated by updating a multi-author post only to have your changes wiped out because someone else was editing at the same time. We listened, and now Nova 2 includes a smart post locking feature that makes sure those frustrations are a thing of the past.

You were frustrated about how difficult it was to add some of your own rich content to Nova. We listened, and now Nova allows you to use those previously disallowed HTML tags (like script, iframe, and embed) to push banner exchanges and YouTube videos to your pages without the hassle of creating new pages and digging in to PHP code.

There have been a massive number of changes and we can’t cover them all here, but check Nova 2 out for yourself and see all the improvements, bug fixes, and new features that have been added to the premier RPG management tool.

» Timeline and Locations

Posted on Friday February 3rd, 2012 @ 9:32am by Commander Caden Blake in Out of Character

Battlestar Megaera, as a game, handles time in a very specific and open way. The goal is give players more freedom with posting, but without taking away the ability of the Game Masters to shape the story and guide the players.

Time in BSM is 'segmented' and play within an active segment is 'liquid'. The key element of this concept is that players can post ANYWHERE WITHIN the active segment of time. Players can also post in the period before the segment, provided they make it clear that it is a flashback post[FB] and they DO NOT alter events that have happened or pre-empt events that have not yet happened.

BSM has an overarching plot and plan that players can effect through the discussion on the forum. It is the goal and job of the Game Masters to execute that plot(and also modify it based on character reactions).

'Segmented liquid time' is an important tool for doing this job. It means Game Masters have the ability to control events to a certain degree and plan ahead for the implementation of the plot. It means we can coordinate the myriad of sub-plots so that they complement the whole and fit together into something approaching a coherent story.

To make this work, all posts MUST have an approximate time placed in the 'Timeline' field. Even if, as in the case of a flashback, it is vague - like '2 years ago'. The current recommended format is 'Day - Time'. Check the Episode Notes for information on active time segments.

Once more, for those who might not know: When you are at the 'Write Episode Post' page. Just underneath the title that says 'Write Episode Post' you will see the words 'Episode Notes'. Look to the right of that and you will see a 'Show/Hide' toggle. Click it and the Episode Notes will be revealed to you. This changes from time to time and I will usually alert everyone through a news post much like this one.

Location is another vital tool, both for the GMs and the Players. It provides quick reference to a reader about where the post takes place and is often as important as when. Be specific, when you can, but at the very least name the ship, planet, moon, station, asteroid, pirate base or even solar system where your post takes place.

A post should ideally only take place in a single location, but this is sci-fi and certain conditions - wireless communication for example - can cause a post to occur in two locations. In such a case, BOTH locations are to be referenced, example: Megaera, CIC/Prometheus Bridge.

When posting, to avoid confusion, only ONE location should be the focus of the post with the responses from the other side being in italics and only contain the dialogue of the characters from the other location. When there is a need to show the action in the other location or switch between locations, use a 'scene divider', and do not simply jump from one location to the other:

==================================
[Prometheus Bridge]
*action takes place here*

==================================
[Megaera CIC]
*action takes place here*

I hope this makes sense. By standardising our posting protocols we will make it easier and less confusing for readers(and the poor GMs who have to moderate). If you have questions or comments, post in the forum topic here.

» Welcome Back

Posted on Wednesday February 1st, 2012 @ 2:03pm by Commander Caden Blake in General News

Welcome back!

The site has been reopened and Episode Two is now live. Please keep in mind the revised posting protocols as well as the time frames. Check the Episode Notes and the forums regularly. The Game Masters for the respective areas(Military, Civilian, Cylon) have been briefed on potential plot points, so don't be shy to contact them and discuss how you can get involved.

Good luck and have fun!
